Doris Jean Castle - Respect the Architect Short Sleeve Unisex T-Shirt

As part of our Respect The Architects series that honors trailblazers from our history whose stories may not have been fully told, this tee honors freedom rider and advocate, Doris Jean Castle. Doris Jean Castle is the younger sister of Oretha Castle Haley. At eighteen years old, she was a participant in the Freedom Rides and her family house on Tonti Street was a meeting place for the Civil Rights. While she viewed herself as an enabler of her older sister, who viewed herself as an enabler for her community. The sisters worked on civil rights together for years and Doris Jean was a behind the scenes support system for Oretha as she became the public face for New Orleans' civil rights struggles.

This tee honors the life and work of Doris Jean Castle. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Amistad Research Center, a New Orleans institution committed to collecting, preserving, and providing open access to original materials that reference the social and cultural importance of America's ethnic and racial history, the African Diaspora, human relations, and civil rights. http://www.amistadresearchcenter.org
